Q. How does Towne & Country suggest the handling of stains?

A. Stained garments are a tricky business and why you should seek out an expert for the proper handling of its removal. Whether it be a result of a greasy food, lipstick or makeup or as a result of some liquid spill; stains can and will ruin your most favorite piece of clothing or sentimental material. Towne & Country would never tell our customers that there is a 100% guarantee of stain removal. Time and time again, we have had experience tell us that stains are stubborn and that the necessary steps to remove the stain would likely ruin the garment as a result of the process. Our dry cleaner can certainly discuss the stain with you at the time of drop-off at our store front counter and can provide you with the likelihood of success or failure of the removal attempt. Be sure to be honest with our cleaner and explain what the cause of the stain was. We have certain chemicals to use with certain stains. These chemicals have proven to interact properly with the stains source as well as the fabric's material to work with the highest degree of removal success. The first inclination of many people is to attempt to remove the stain using chemicals available to the homeowner or even some form of home remedy. We would never discourage this attempt for garments that are easily replaceable. The major concern we would be concerned about for those more expensive or un-replaceable items is that if a home remedy is attempted, there is the possibility that the stain will set and become permanent.

Q. Can any dry cleaner properly handle Leather, Suede and/or Fur cleaning?

A. Garments made from Leather, Suede and Fur are very likely the most expensive pieces in your wardrobe. You should certainly have a high level of trust in the company you choose to service the cleaning and repair of such garments. Especially when you take into consideration that these garments are not manufactured products but are made from animal skins, leaving them more susceptible to damage from improper care. Towne & Country Cleaners is one of New England's largest Leather, Suede and Fur care specialists with over 50 years of experience in the business. Our services include cleaning, repairs, waterproofing, restoration, alterations and storage. We can store your Fur during the spring/summer season in our secure, temperature/climate controlled storage vault. Fur appraisals for insurance or sale purposes are available upon request.. Our store front counter staff is properly trained to look over your garment and inform you of any issues that may arise from the cleaning processes. A list of these of issues can be found here. Often, you are not informed of these possible issues when purchasing the garment and manufacturers have done their best to cover up previously existing skin defects. We provide this information so that our customers are aware that these defects or flaws can be exposed as a result of the cleaning process. We find that our more satisfied customers are those that are the most informed customers.

Q. Why should I have my Wedding Gown preserved? Does it require cleaning prior to preservation?

A. Wedding Gown preservation is truly a bride's personal choice. If you plan on storing the gown for many years as a memorial keepsake to pass along to another family member, then our suggestion is to have the gown cleaned before safely preserving it for the future. There are several reasons for this, the main being a worry about any existing stains that may have happened during your special day could oxidize and ruin the fabric. Oxidation causes further discoloration of the fabric and deteriorates the integrity of the fabric over long periods of time. Our preservation process includes the cleaning of the gown including stain removal. Our preservation box is sturdy and will hold up for many years. It will also allow the fabric within to breathe, which is a necessity to prolong the life of the fabric without experiencing discoloration or brittleness. All cardboard and tissue used within the box are certified acid-free to further ensure the proper preservation of the gown while also assisting in providing a proper presentation of your gown within the box. Be sure to store this box in a cool, dry and dark place. The box cannot protect your gown from poor storage conditions.
